Chapter Four

On Christmas morning, Taze woke up feeling vaguely bleary and confused. There was a strange weight on his chest—both unfamiliar and not. He blinked, and everything came rushing back. The orphanage. Noel. Their mating.

Taze melted against the pillows, smiling like an idiot. He scanned Noel's face with avid eyes. His mate was still sleeping, a small furrow in his brow. When Taze pulled him in closer, Noel let out a sleepy little mumble and settled down.

It was so comfortable that Taze almost couldn't believe it. He couldn't even remember the last time he'd felt so happy, so carefree. Maybe years ago, when he'd lived in the pack. No, not even then.

The thought sent a pang of grief through him, and it was strong enough that it stirred Noel from his slumber. "Taze?"

"Morning, baby." Taze smiled down at his mate, shaking off the shadows of the past. "Sleep well?"

"Slept great. You tired me out." Noel gently cupped his cheek. "You feeling okay?"

"Yes. Just... thinking."

Noel didn't ask, but something knowing flashed in his beautiful eyes. Taze knew Noel had seen at least a part of Taze's memories the night before, but he probably didn't know everything. And suddenly, he wanted to explain. He wanted to tell Noel all about it.

Outside, it was still snowing. Taze slid out of bed and brushed his lips over Noel's. "Come on. Let's go for a walk."

They didn't go for a walk immediately. Instead, they ended up taking a shower together, which naturally led to Taze fucking Noel against the wall. God, seeing Noel's tiny hole stretch around Taze's dick was easily the sexiest sight in existence. The echo of his musical voice against the tiles was the sweetest sound Taze had ever heard. And when Taze bit Noel again, he knew that his adorable little partridge had claimed his heart within less than twenty four hours of their meeting.

A little while later, they ended up in the small playground in front of Noel's townhome. It was early still, so there were no children around. Noel sat in one of the swings and Taze laughed and pushed it forward.

Every time the swing came in, he stole a kiss from Noel's sweet lips. It was nice and lazy and comfortable—and it helped Taze say what he needed to.

He stopped the swing and wrapped his arms around Noel's waist. "I was a regular werewolf once. I grew up in a pack, and my father was the Alpha. There was always something magical about Christmas in the pack. I remember that, as children, my brother and I would watch human TV shows and we'd whine when we couldn't get the same treats. But my mother made these delicious cookies, and we forgot all about it. To this day, I don't know what she put in them—she claimed it was love. It was probably true."

"It sounds nice," Noel whispered, leaning against him.

Taze squeezed Noel tighter and remembered yesterday's Christmas Eve. That was probably the closest thing to a family Noel had ever gotten.
